Whoosh

My ESPN portfolio is on news stands now. I have the cover with Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant. Also inside are 22 pages of story on the next big things in sports featuring Mr Durant, Chris Johnson, Steven Strasburg, Drew Storen, John Wall, and Melanie Oudin.

Thanks again to all the awesome folks at ESPN and my crew who held it together during a lot of bouncing around. I am super proud to have the cover.

Just shot an 8 page fashion/art story for Foam Magazine which we are jamming on to complete for the next issue Much thanks to Zoe, Kristina and Alex

Also just shot Aloe Blacc who is an amazing artist on Stones Throw Records. Truly an inspiration to work with.

Check out Project White T Shirt . An amazing project curated by Ritchie Chan of Triple Major. I shot the catalog of the exhibition which open at Welcome Hunters on Dec 19th. New LA Record with Luis and The Wildfires on the cover, out now as well as zines at the LA Record store.

Singing Up To People Like That

2 years ago today, well two years ago last night I sat in my car at three in the morning crying like a baby because you made a song come true. When I was a kid, when rock and roll and soft rock and new wave and punk rock and all of it began to have its amazing power on me like nothing else I would hear songs and dream, wish, beg some kind of god that the feelings described in these mind melting opuses I crawled inside to would someday happen to me. That the lift that the arrangement and the words and the kick drum at just the right place and how they all swirled in ways totally indescribable. That someday the songs would come true. And after coming home late and finding your package and opening the CD and having no where to play it except my car and driving around as each song amazed me more than the next then wham in front of my house after I had driven by yours to see if the light was on and I came back and before I could pull in the drive way the song came on. I hadn't heard it in years and years and it hit and I pulled over immediately even though I was feet from my driveway cause it peeled away everything and I sat stunned sobbing and knowing that what ever happened, what ever happened when I called you the next day and we went to eat and we held hands by the library and decided to try again, no matter what happened you had made the song come true. Years and years and years of wondering why life never seemed to have the same power as it did when those songs came on and then there it was. 3am in front of my house crying while the parking guy told me i had to move my car as I realized that the song was describing exactly what was going on at that very moment, like you were talking to me, directly to me through my radio. Thank you my love. For this I owe you all
Yours Tru(e)ly
Dan

Reeling In The Years

A couple years ago I did a story on Clifton's Cafeteria in Downtown Los Angeles. My friend Cali introduced me to the place in 2003. It a beautiful beautiful place and a true document of an Los Angeles rarely seen anymore, or that many people never even knew existed. Ive traveled a bit and I think it is in my top 5 favorite places in the world. There is a giant tree stump with a bit of revisionist history on it that I always loved. The only down fall now is that the chapel door is now locked open as I guess a few folks got busted doin it in there. God bless them.

My Apologies

To anyone who read my post regarding the Lifter Puller catalog release. When you purchase the book, the down load card that comes with it is good for the entire catalog but not the live tracks. The live tracks are only available via purchasing the enhanced album online. I am sorry for the misinformation. I mistakenly posted that the live tracks were available via the book/card combo. Sorry about that

Dont you remember the years

Woke up this morning and after a meeting in the BH I stopped at the Book Soup bookstore which is one of my favorite places in LA. Found an Ellen von Unwerth book I've been searching for so that made the day to start with. I then proceeded to see the Art For Obama book chronicling the Manifest Hope shows in Denver and DC. I had work in the shows and was so excited to see a spread featuring the two pieces I had shown in the book. Thanks a huge to Yosi Sargent, Jen Gross and all at Evolutionary Media, Shepard Fairey and all the folks who participated in the shows and the effort. Very grateful to be a part.

Purses DOWN!

Just got back from Park City where I shot a big portfolio for ESPN The Magazine. Had a blast with all the athletes and met some of Park Cities favorite sons at a bar on main street that I forgot the name of. Here is Dan Busta aka Mr Moustache with one of his many dancing partners. Big thanks to Jen (she took the snap of Dan and Co.), Mason, and Dan for the hard work and good times.

Felt 3

The new Felt record comes out Nov 11. The third one I have done the art for so i guess thats a hat trick! So stoked to work on another one and to work again with Kai Benson who is Minnesotas secret weapon in the design/art direction department.

Accidental Memorial

Running around Joshua Tree on what happened to be the 36th anniversary of the death of Gram Parsons. Cosmic American.

Jeff Light and Dark

Holly and Justin came by one day and dropped off a land camera. I've always had them and messed with them a bit but with the discovery of how cool the afternoon light looks at the studio and also remembering that there is a place on 3rd St that makes batteries for them, I have started to take a portrait of everyone who comes by each day. Jeff Electric was by today doing some work and out of the props laying around he opted for Heathers Mr S hat. A bold move. But, as is evidenced, Jeff is a bold man.

Magic Hour

Don't you love it when a plan comes together?

Summer Closer

My friends Claire and Jeremy had us print up a zine for their show SF at the Medicine Agency. The opening was Saturday but I think its up for a bit so if you are in San Francisco go check it out. Its pretty awesome.

Better Late

Hope R.I.P.

Not So Distant

Ive been going through images putting together a show that will open in November. Found this roll of New Years Day where Caitlin and I have started a tradition of driving the length of Sunset Blvd starting at Figueroa and diving into the water at Matador as the sun sets. The sun set part wasnt planned as much as we have jammed to get there before it gets dark so we wind up jumping in at sunset. The flock of cormorants were perched on the rock when we got there and as we ran into the water they all flew with us, circled above and then returned to the rock as we went back to shore. Like a winged halo over the birth of the new year. Freezing and smiling and knowing the beginning was only the beginning

My youth redesigned

Eyedea  First Ave 9.8.09

I was in Minneapolis for the last couple days shooting the last peice of the Felt 3 cover and doing a little work on the book. I shot a photo of my friend Sean standing in the exact same place I photographed him for the first time in 1998 about an hour after getting off the plane so the whole trip started as one massive flash back. I then stepped into the offices of Target with my friend Jason Miller and realized they were now occupying the space that used to house the City Center food court. It was a bizarre feeling to watch the Target creative team buzzing away in the spot where I learned how to smoke, met girls and punk rocked posed when i was 14 years old. A massive chunk of my 80's Minnesota new wave youth was spent roaming Lagoon and Hennepin and The Ediner Cafe but the base of my pre drivers liscence existence stemmed out of massive City Center food court hang time. I know its a mall but it was in the middle of downtown ands its cold in Minnesota and you had to sit somewhere to wait for the all ages shows at the Entry to start.

Olden

I used to play in a band called Lifter Puller from Minneapolis. We are re-releasing EVERYTHING we ever recorded plus bonus live tracks. We have made a 98 page book with tons of old photos, interviews with friends who were around the band during its life span. Plus all the lyrics. We will be selling the book with a download card in the back for all the music. I just got the proof copy and it looks great. Check here for more info as we figure out its exact release date.

Work Front

Photos in the new Interview Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Maxim and....I think thats it. Just shot for ESPN, Haus of Howe, Exene Cervenka, DubLab, Shephard Fairey, and the upcoming Felt Record. New Zine from Fathersons and two shows coming up this fall. Feels all windy.
